Investigations

Diagnosis is primarily made after visual inspection of the lesions.

Blood tests:

• VZV specific IgM antibody: this is only present during chicken pox or herpes zoster and not when the virus is dormant.

Management

• Patients require isolation from susceptible individuals at least until the lesions are crusted over in order to minimise the risk of spread.

• Oral Acyclovir should be used to hasten healing of the lesions.

• Immunosuppressed individuals must be treated with IV Acyclovir.

• Analgesia is key in symptom relief.

• Antibiotics may be required if there is secondary bacterial infection.
